Canberra is the federal capital of Australia. It is located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), southeastern Australia. It is approximately 150 miles (240km) southwest of Sydney. Canberra is located astride the Molonglo River which is a tributary to the Murrumbidgee River.

Population Growth
In 1908, Canberra was chosen to be the country’s capital. Two architects from Chicago, Illinois were given the task of designing the blueprint for the city in 1911. The Federal Parliament was seated in its new offices by 1927.
The city’s population was just over 1,700 in 1911. It grew quickly to nearly 9,000 people by 1930. In 1971, the city’s population had reached more than 100,000. The population grew to over 300,000.
