The capital of the Northern Territory of Australia is Darwin. It’s located on the Timor Sea in the Northern Territory. The population of Darwin is expected to reach 147,531 in 2022. It covers a 3,163.8 square km (1,221.6 square miles) area, making it the largest city in Australia and one of eight most populous Australian cities. It is located on a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. To the east and west, the city faces Frances Bay and Cullen Bay. Traditional custodians of the Greater Darwin area are the Aboriginal people from the Larrakia language groups. They are also the earliest known original inhabitants.

Our research shows that Darwin’s population will be 164,796 at the end of June 2022. Because ABS follows Australia’s financial year, we use the end June every year. This calculation uses the average annual growth rate of 2.25 percent over the past 10 years. The calculation is based on the average growth rate of 2.25% over the last 10 years (see the table in the next section). We believe that using the most recent years’ data will improve the accuracy.
Darwin Population Growth
With an annual growth rate at 2.6% since 2006, Darwin is one the most rapidly growing capital cities in Australia. The population growth rate in Darwin has been very steady and consistent over the past ten years. It ranges from 1.35% up to 3.08%, adding approximately 1,900 to 4,200 people every year to its overall population.

Darwin’s population density is 46.5 people per square km. In 2019, the median age for males is 34.1, and females are 34.1. The total 1104,897 people who work in Darwin are the Darwin city’s working population. The population of Darwin is expected to reach 147,331 in 2021.
The total area of the city itself is 112 square kilometers (43 square miles). The current population density in Darwin is approximately 703 per square kilometre, or 1,822 per sq mile. The urban area covers 3,163 square kilometers. With a population of over 145,000 people, there are approximately 46 people per square kilometre.
Darwin’s Demographic Patterns
The net interstate migration is extremely volatile and can detract from NT’s population growth. The factors that influence arrivals and departures from the NT include economic and labour market conditions as well as lifestyle and housing prices.
2020-21
- Queensland was the Territory’s largest market for arrivals and departures. It accounted for 30% of all movers (9,367 people), followed by New South Wales (5.960 persons) or Victoria (5.911 persons).
- The NT’s population was more mobile than any other jurisdiction. It had an interstate migration rate between the states of 13% and 5% per year (30,897 people), compared to about 2% to 5% in most states (Chart 5)
- Strong net outflows were recorded to Queensland (1.529 people), South Australia (606 people) and Western Australia (445).
