Adrenal Health and our Diet.

I am not a health nut but…  Since contracting Fibromyalgia I often research food, diets and fads to find out what may help and what probably won’t.  I do this with foods, therapies and even exercise.

Yesterday I learned quite a bit about the Adrenal glands – which sit on top of the kidneys. It seems they are very reactive to stress and help to stimulate the flight or fight response.  They also help with detoxing the kidneys.  Adrenal fatigue is not a proven disease.  It is more like a lay mans interpretation of what happens when the adrenal glands are overloaded.  It sure makes sense to me.

to support our adrenal glands we need to take control of our stress.  That really is easier said than done.  There are a variety of methods that can all help a bit.

Magnesium is very helpful for lowering stress levels.  Meditation works wonders, as does mild exercise.  Playing with a pet, enjoying a  reading a good book, lazing in the sun – all help!

Diet is especially important to support the Adrenal glands.  Vegetables that are high in iron, such as mushrooms, dark green vegetables and micro green.  Fresh sprouts are a great way to add a quick pick me up for the adrenal glands.  Nuts and seeds are also very supportive, as is spirulina, quinoa, flaxseeds and chia seeds.  Good fats from coconut oil and avocado are acceptable.   Really – the diet is a lot like vegetarian paleo.

Avoid all sugars and foods such as potato that have a low GI and quickly turn into sugar. Unfortunately (for me anyway) this also includes not drinking alcohol, no honey or sugar in our tea or coffee. Also to be avoided is almost all goods that have been processed such as flour, white rice, breads, pasta etc…

It seems a bit rough but highly sensible.  I have been sticking to a very healthy eating plan and reduced my honey intake significantly.  I justify to myself that all the herb teas I drink are healthy so it is a good balance.  I also sneakk the occasional  potato into my meal.

Today I had a potato sliced and fried in coconut oil. I topped this with tomato, spinach, mushrooms, capsicum and onion.  It was delicious, filling and very nutritious.  It also took me less than 15 minutes to make.

Why not give your adrenal glands some recovery time?  Even a couple of weeks would help them rejuvenate and begin to work at maximum performance again.

Exercise – Health Benefits versus Pain

Exercise is, apparently, quite important for health and healing.  After reading a scientific study about how exercise allows nitric oxide to be activated in our blood stream, which in turns opens up rip the blood vessels for better circulation etc… I decided to take the chooks out the front for a spot of gardening.

The chooks (hens) were so happy that I stayed out for quite a while.  My little Angel (the latest rescue galah) came out with me and walked around the lawn.  My exercise was gentle – a little weed pulling, following Angel (she can’t fly) so she didn’t climb a high tree.  I weeded a raised strawberry garden and picked some lavender for my neighbour.

so the exercise was nothing major.  And yet – I came inside with my back burning up and hardly able to straighten up.  Today- I am not so sure about this exercise business. I think I will wait until I receive my plain patches before I try that out again!

Medication and Herbal Remedies can be used in Synergy

As I think everyone is aware – I have Fibromyalgia.  I was diagnosed earlier this year.  In some ways I was relieved about the diagnosis – because it meant that I was not a hypochondriac, nor was I going crazy (or crazier).

I was also shocked that a healthy vegetarian who ate good wholesome food and lots of raw veggies should get this disease.

I have done my best to find alternative and natural therapies to help me fight this disease.  Unfortunately it is an uphill battle and I do resort to prescription medicine daily.  I supplement with turmeric, kombucha, ginger and herb teas.  I will be continuing to explore natural ways to keep the Fibromyalgia at bay.  I will also share my journey with you and I look forward to some interesting feedback.

I have been been rather remiss in keeping up with MMS and DMSO but back onto it next week.  I also tried some pain patches called Powerstrips.  They worked so well that I will be selling them on this website.

  • There may sometimes be illnesses that we cannot fight or contend with naturally.  That does not mean we have failed.  Holistic medicine is really a marriage of the old and the new.  Science and anecdotal medicines and treatments can work together in synergy.  This is how we get the best chance possible to heal and regenerate.  We cannot do this if we are in so much pain that we can’t perform simple tasks, get a good night’s sleep and be responsible for our lives.

    A Simple Stir Fry

I have been thinking lately of “Fast Food”. No one wBpnts to spend hours in the kitchen after a busy day out. I am, by no means, a saint. I spent must of today out and my husband was working late. Here is what I did to make a quick and easy meal!

I set my Ipad up in the kitchen with a classic Iview Who Dunnit? To keep me entertained. I set two of the birds up for company and to give them fresh food!

I cut up a frozen onion and put that in the wok to fry while I cut off some frozen turmeric and ginger. Then I threw in some lemon grass powder, chopped up some chili and capsicum and put all that on to cook with a little Himalayan salt. I put in cut up broccoli (including stalks) and unpeeled thinly sliced carrot. While that was cooking I chopped up some spinach, kale and rocket from yesterday’s big discount find at the green grocers. I just put all the greens on top, splashed on some vegetarian stir fry sauce and put a plate over it. I turned the gas off and poured a glass of wine – Mmm.

When my husband got home we fried hokkien noodles in sesame oil and leeks. Tossed it together and wow. Some where in the mix my Husband, who us not a vegetarian yet, cooked a piece of steak – Grrrr. The meal probably took an hour to cook because I was watching an episode at the sample time.
The meal was delicious, I did most of the fishes whilst cooking, an

The Case of the Dissapearing Calcified Brain Tumour

So the Brain Mole – a small calcified tumour. The doctor said I would die of old age before the tumour killed me. I decided I wasn’t risking it and went on a rigid diet for six weeks. The diet consisted of being completely vegan and following a protocol from The Cancer Tutor – http://www.cancertutor.com
The protocol consisted of using MSM and DMSO on a regular hourly basis. I also used Zeolite for good measure.
I had my MRI 3 months later and there was no sign of a calcified tumour. They said they must have made a mistake – but I know it was the diet that got rid of it!

DMSO – Natures Gift for Illness and Pain.

I discovered DMSO last year when I was told by my Doctor that I had a small calcified tumour on my brain. I looked to the Internet to find myself a natural cure. Admittedly I had time as I was told I would probably die of old age before the tumour. I was concerned about the effects of the tumor such as memory loss and the inability to think clearly. As it happened – the tumour was not effecting that – the Fibromyalgia that I didn’t know I had, was causing these problems.
I actually went on a very strict protocol of a completely vegan diet, DMSO and an off shoot of DMSO called MSM. I also went to exercise classes at least 4 times per week.
I used these DSMO and MSM together every hour for 8 hours for a 6 week period. My mind became clear, energy levels were up and I became at least 6 kilo lighter.

This is an excerp I copied from WebMd today (1/6/14). ‘DMSO is a prescription medicine and dietary supplement. It can be taken by mouth, applied to the skin (used topically), or injected into the veins (used intravenously or by IV).

DMSO is taken by mouth, used topically, or given intravenously for the management of amyloidosis and related symptoms. Amyloidosis is a condition in which certain proteins are deposited abnormally in organs and tissues.

DMSO is used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and muscle and skeletal injuries. DMSO is also used topically to treat painful conditions such as headache, inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe facial pain called tic douloureux. It is used topically for eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and problems with the retina; for foot conditions including bunions, calluses, and fungus on toenails; and for skin conditions including keloid scars and scleroderma. It is sometimes used topically to treat skin and tissue damage caused by chemotherapy when it leaks from the IV that is used to deliver it. DMSO is used either alone or in combination with a drug called idoxuridine to treat pain associated with shingles (herpes zoster infection).

Intravenously, DMSO is used to lower abnormally high blood pressure in the brain. It is also given intravenously to treat bladder infections (interstitial cystitis) and chronic inflammatory bladder disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved certain DMSO products for placement inside the bladder to treat symptoms of chronic inflammatory bladder disease. DMSO is sometimes placed inside bile ducts with other medications to treat bile duct stones.

In manufacturing, DMSO is used as an industrial solvent for herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics, and plant hormones.

    How does it work?
DMSO helps medicines get through the skin and can affect proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and water in the body.’ http://www.webmd.com

    MSM and Fibromyalgia

I take MSM daily to help with my fibromyalgia.  It particularly helps with the brain fog that I used to experience.  Before I found out that I had fibromyalgia I went to the Doctor on three separate occasions to find out if I had some type of dementia.
Fibromyalgia is a very cruel condition.  We with fibromyalgia suffer from a myriad of aches and pains to the extent that we hurt all over and the usual pain killers are to no avail.  We suffer from over-whelming tiredness to the point where we feel completely exhausted and may sit in the one place for hours, not knowing what we have been doing.  We also have depression and anxiety which creates a vicious cycle of pain, depression, pain, anxiety – mainly because the simplest thing like doing the dishes can take over an hour.
There are many different medications to take for all the different ailments but not one tablet for fibromyalgia.  Even though I was diagnosed by a specialist – my Doctor maintains that we need to treat every sympton separately.  I have to admit that I feel much better after changing to my new Doctor.
Because I like to be natural and healthy, I also supplement with MSM, DMSO, Turmeric, Cinnamon, Honey, Ginger, Garlic and Apple Cider Vinegar.

    DMSO – Dimethyl Sulfoxide

I have been using DMSO for the last year for a variety of reasons.  I used it with a combination of  MMS (watch for this in another post) and citric acid to dissolve a small calcified tumour in my brain.  My brain is now clear of tumour but still has some calcification. I frequently  put DMSO on my arthritic fingers (I take my rings if first).  I use it on my neck and back – both of which have some damage due to work injuries.  Every time I use it I get some relief.

I have used DMSO to heal a fungus toe of a loved  one!  I took pictures each day of the improvements!
    Toe with Fungus

    Day 2 of DMSO treatment.

    Day 4 of DMSO Treatment

    Day 4 of DMSO Treatment

There is a very special quality that DMSO has – it can actually penetrate and carry other medicines through the body!

DMSO can carry other medications and substances through the skin and all through the body.  The down side of this is that it will also carry alcohol and other substances through as well.

Clean your hands and the area of your body it is going on – very thoroughly!  For about an hour after you have used it keep yourself clean and away from any products it may may absorb.

I have taken it internally – 1 tsp full to stop a sore throat, sinus infection and other viruses.  It actually tastes really foul and leaves a very garlicky odour.   Usually I avoid swallowing it but it only takes a couple of doses to make me better!

DMSO is not approved by the FDA  – there are a variety of reasons and excuses that they have.  It is approved for some urinary tract infections.  The most common reason given for not being able to approve it is that it has such a strong odour of garlic that it is not possible to do a double blind test.

You can order it online or from animal or specialty stores.  Make sure you get human grade DMSO. Below is an excerp I copied from Web Med – my favourite – go to place for medical information.www.webmd.com (viewed 1/6/14). It explains it succinctly and concisely.

Medicinally, it is not approved for humans by the FDA.  It is however, easy to buy over the internet or even from pet suppliers as it is used extensively by veterinarians and animal breeders, particularly horse breeders and racers.

How does it work? DMSO helps medicines get through the skin and can effect protein, carbohydrates, fats, and water in the body.

If you have aches and pains, injuries that flare up or other health problems – give DMSO a go.  Just remember to change the areas that you put it on each day!  It can irritate the skin.  Put some aloe vera in the freezer and use it as required.  Aloe vera is magical for fixing burns and skin irritations, just make sure it is not the bought aloe vera that even though it says it is pure, has alcohol in it as a preservative – OUCH!

    Manganese

While I was doing research for weight loss shakes I came across the mineral “manganese” many times.  I didn’t know anything about it so I looked it up.

I was very surprised to find that this particular mineral is very important to bone development, brain function and memory.

Manganese also improves the functioning of the thyroid gland, regulation of blood sugar levels and metabolism of fats and cholesterol.

Nuts, seeds, whole wheat bread, tofu, beans, fish, spinach, kale, black tea, berries, pineapple, avocado, spinach, garlic, Spirulina, peppermint, coconut milk, rice and wheat bran are all very high in manganese.

many of these are also perfect ingredients for a weight loss smoothie .  Why not try this recipe today?

    Weight Loss Smoothie

    1. 1/2 cup coconut milk
    2. 1/2 cup milk alternative (or water and 1T whey powder)
    3. 2 T LSA mix
    4. 1T oat or wheat bran
    5. 1/2 cup avocado
    6. 1 t cacao or cocoa powder (optional)
    7. Stevia or honey to taste.

mix all together – I like to warm my milk. I also like to add a pinch of chilli powder.  Give it a go and let me know what you think.

    Smoothies, Shakes and Juices

I am slowly (very slowly) starting a career in freelance writing.  So far it is very low pay but a lot of fun! Today I started a project writing about Shakes.  It is really interesting to go to the source with research and find out the truth behind the hype.  Today I discovered that quinoa, chia and flax seeds really are super foods with some amazing health qualities.  Do they help us to lose weight?  Well yes… And no.

Flax seed and Chia have got health benefits of their own which we will discuss in another blog.  The great thing about them from a weight loss point of view, is that they are both mucilagenous.  This means that they are gelatinous, they thicken the drink they are mixed with and they make us feel full.  Of course if we add something unhealthy like ice cream or shop bought fruit juice we are upping the calories and lowering the GI (Glycemic Index).  Quinoa adds protein for extra fullness and extra well being.

Juicing seems to be the best way to lose weight but I  have concerns about the fiber being wasted (or in our case being fed to the chooks).  I believe that we need some of that fibre ourselves.  Smoothies can be very fattening with a low glycemic index unless we are really careful about the ingredients.  Bananas, although quite healthy, have also got quite a low GI – about the same as biscuits.  This can be remedied by adding a low GI ingredient such as oatmeal, LSA or even psyllium husks. mucilaginous.

Shakes seem to have qualities of both juicing and smoothies with added ingredients for health and fullness. The use of whey powder or it her protein powders typifies a “shake”.  They also have a grain base – such as oatmeal, quinoa, chia (not actually a grain) and LSA.

If  we want to lose weight we need to balance the ingredients in any of these so that we are getting a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and proteins.  It needs to have an ingredient that will give a sense of fullness and it needs to be tasty!

To make a delicious healthy drink there are a variety of natural sweeteners that are low calorie and even low GI.  Stevia is my favourite – I have two stevia plants growing and am cultivating more.  Stevia can have a bitter after taste but I find it really blends well with the stronger tastes.  Xylotil is another natural sweetener that can be used.  I often like to use a little honey.  Sometimes it is just good to add a small amount of sweet fruit.

There is so much more to learn and share – I look forward to bringing this knowledge to you!
